10 de Mayo
Fernando Delgadillo
May 10th
At General Matías First School
year after year they fix the place up real nice
and on May 10th at the solemn ceremony
every mother feels like crying.
Since February the rehearsals
for what should be celebrated here in May
lots of dances and non-danceable speeches
that the kids will present to their moms.
The Gym teacher and the piano one
said 'ready now' so it won't fail
while the kids with their little arms crossed
say 'What time is recess gonna end, man!'
The school principal is so fat
she could barely fit through the door
and since she didn't fit in the spot they saved for her
she had to stand through the whole festival.
Pedrito Flores, one of the most diligent
'That's my mom!' he promises to recite
but since he said he had a bad memory
he completed the text with the national anthem.
The daring second-grade girls
performed a can-can dance.
The third graders danced a polka
and the fifth graders will perform a short play.
Since the fourth graders came up short
we repeat with the 'sixth' graders once again.
All the kids are sunburnt
and the record player screeches like an animal
the moms, without having breakfast...
And the principal says 'Let me sit down'.
At General Matías First School
year after year they fix the place up real nice
and on May 10th at the solemn ceremony
every mother... feels like crying.
