Totentanz
Die Streuner
Dance of Death
The maiden sleeps in her chamber,
the moon looks trembling inside.
From outside, it sings and sounds
like waltz melodies.
I'll take a look out the window,
who down there disturbs my peace.
There stands a skeleton,
fiddling and singing along:
You once promised me a dance and broke your word
yes, today there's a ball in the churchyard, come with me and we'll dance there! (2x)
The maiden is seized with a great force,
it lures her out of the house.
She follows the skeleton, singing
and fiddling as it strides ahead.
It fiddles and dances and hops
and rattles with its bones
and nods and nods with its skull
creepily in the moonlight.
You once promised me a dance and broke your word
yes, today there's a ball in the churchyard, come with me and we'll dance there!
You once promised me a dance and broke your word
yes, today there's a ball in the churchyard, come with me and we'll dance there!
