The Communion
Early this morning her mother woke her up
Her mother woke her up if she was asleep
If she fell asleep last night thinking that today was her first communion
And I didn't know what to do, whether to light another cigarette or go back to bed
Today she gave me two white kisses and I wanted to eat her
She is a lit rose, an explosion of joy
Thanking God for seeing all her family at her first communion
Like a little bride, she went out through the gate
Through the gate went her prayer book and her headband
And the fragrance of a flower on the way to the church
God is waiting for her
The church wide open, the woman
Who kindly taught me how to pray
She mingles with the children and takes her to the altar
She is a lit rose, an explosion of joy
Thanking God for seeing all her family at her first communion
White as innocence and the flowers in the vase
And the flowers in the vase kept silent
The church listening to the prayer
And she looks at me smiling because she has received God
And I, who cry for nothing, said the preaching priest
Fraternally give peace and gave me two white kisses
