Greetje uit de polder
Eddy Christiani
Greetings from the countryside
Greetings from the countryside
I know in the countryside there's a little house
Hidden by flowers and bushes
A ditch in front with a little step
And windows with red and white shutters
I go there every year on vacation
I feed the chickens and milk the cow
I mow and I sow a little
And kiss in the clog shed with Greetje
Greetje, you're so beautiful
refrain:
Little Greetje from the countryside
Child of the low land
Blonde hair and blue eyes
Just give me your hand
Little Greetje from the countryside
Tell me quickly now
When the wheat is ripe
Will you be my wife
Because Greetje has promised me her heart
But first the wheat had to be harvested
I asked her again but she shook her head
Now the rye had to be sown
Then she had no time because the potatoes had to be harvested
Then the cows became mothers so Greetje
Had no time to get married, you know
Greetje, you're so beautiful
refrain
I got angry, mad, and furious and went to her
And would clearly command her
That harvesting, or digging, or the fate of the cow
Couldn't care less about me anymore
I arrived at the ditch with a step
And stood on the bridge in astonishment
I couldn't go in because you see
There was foot-and-mouth disease with Greetje
Greetje, you're so beautiful
Little Greetje from the countryside
Tell me quickly now
When the wheat is ripe
Will you be my wife
