La Fille Et Le Chien
Édith Piaf
The Girl and the Dog
Midnight's hanging in the wind that sobs
Everything seems dark in the big sleeping Paris
It's chilly and it's pouring down rain
Not even a mutt's out in this weather
Look over there, there's a poodle
Hey bro! Come show me your face
Sometimes like me
You might not have a place to hide
On nights when it pours down...
Poor pup, you look so miserable
But you've got an honest face
And kindness shines in your good eyes
Even though you're just a beast
Gently you lick my hand
Go ahead, there's no offense
I'm just a poor girl
And you're just a poor dog
Nice to meet you!
You don't come out, Oh no! from some rich lady's place
You’re a bit scruffy and you don’t have a coat
You’re more of a stray like I’m a homeless girl
We both have a roof over our heads
True, you’re not fat, you probably haven’t eaten,
Yeah, I know that, I don’t dine every day
You take hits more often than you get fed,
I sell love when I need to eat
Poor pup, it really seems
Like you understand all my life of misery,
When your gaze fixes on me sadly
I see a tear in your eyelid
But your fate is just like mine
And your life isn’t worth more than mine
You can curse fate just like I do
And keep a dog from your bitch
We’re both out here tonight on the street
Not a passerby in sight
No one else tonight on the street
Will pick up either the girl or the dog
All shivering in the cold wind blowing
Let’s find some shelter under a bridge
And since we’re buddies in this mess
I’ll be your sister, we won’t part ways
Poor pup, we’re not lucky
Left out in the pouring rain
Yet to men, you’re the best friend
And deep down, I’m not mean
And yet, you see, old buddy
When the final hour strikes
I might just die in the gutter
And you’ll be good for the dogcatcher...
