Le chemin des forains
Édith Piaf
The Path of the Carnies
They’ve pierced the night
With a flash of silver sparkles
They’re gonna kill the boredom
For one night in people’s minds
Dancing on a wire, walking on their hands
They’ll do tricks that’ll break their backs
The carnies…
A tune in the open air
A little clever monkey
Nibbling on a nut while dreaming
On the shoulder of an old musician
Who dreams of nothing at all.
They’ve pierced the night
With a big laugh mixed with tears
They’ve killed the boredom
With the echo of their own pain
They’ve taken the coins in the palms of their hands
They’ve packed their bags and hit the road again
The carnies…
Their joyful childlike gestures
And their wonderful clothes
Are forever etched in the eyes
Of the onlookers in a sleepy village
Who will dream tonight.
Will dream tonight
Of a flash of silver sparkles
That comes to kill the boredom
In the hearts and minds of people
But the shadow closes in at the bend in the road
And only God knows where they’ll be tomorrow
The carnies…
Who are leaving into the night…
