Le ciel est fermé
Édith Piaf
The Sky is Closed
Tired of the people on this earth,
The Good Lord, who’s overwhelmed,
Ponders between two mysteries,
And decided to quit his job.
He snuffed out a few stars,
Closed the sky from top to bottom,
And from a cloud, made a sail
That caught the wind and took off.
And there goes the sun all sideways...
All the men walking with their heads down...
And the earth twisting upside down...
And the sea getting bored and leaving...
But the prayers...
The prayers keep rising up
'Cause all the men...
All the men keep praying...
And that’s where they get annoyed,
The prayers that didn’t ask for anything...
And that’s where we see them lining up,
The prayers waiting for the Good Lord...
So, since they’ve got nothing to do
The prayers,
They share their secrets:
- Why are you here?
- I’m here on behalf of a guy named
Romeo, and a certain Juliet...
- What kind of trouble are they causing down here?
Don’t they want to let them love in peace?
It’s tough to sort out their story... And you?
- Me, I’m here for a guy who’s got big issues with his tax man...
I honestly don’t see what I can do for him! Pfft!... Anyway...
- And you?
- Me, professional secrecy!
- And you over there?
- Me, Ha! I’m here on behalf of a madman!
Well, a poet... It’s the same thing!
First off, what he wants with the earth is impossible!
And preaching kindness is so outdated...
- Tell us! It might be funny?!
- If you want! Anyway, it’ll never change anything! So here it is:
"I know I’m bothering you,
But here’s the thing: I need you!
Please, lend me some angels!
We need a few everywhere...
For the sun... one for each person!
And for love... Oh! Please!
A whole lot of love in the hands of men
So they can make big bouquets..."
And there’s the Good Lord back again.
The thunder has lost its job.
The sun has passed overhead
And now the earth walks straight.
Open the gates,
Let’s bring
The sun into the fields,
Let the earth,
All the earth
Finally turn without shaking
And love has bloomed in the fields
And the men picked it while singing.
The lovers would never die again
That’s why everyone loved each other...
What a shame for the girls and boys
That all of this is just a song...
