Las Vueltas de La Vida
Edmundo Rivero
The Turns of Life
Standing on the sidewalk,
Under the rain that soaked me,
I saw her pass by.
The limousine car,
Like a case, isolated me from her
With its glass.
She stopped, gave me a few bucks
And in the indifferent look
She threw as she continued,
I noticed that to her
I was an insignificant beggar...
And I laughed.
Great bitch! The turns that life takes!
Yesterday I was rich, I enjoyed her love,
I had her dressed in silks and lace,
And I bought her unmatched jewels and cars.
Later on, gambling had me in a hurry,
The game is more treacherous than any woman.
Without money, I soon found myself abandoned
And today, a peso is all I need to eat.
What a change! I used to be a big shot settled down
And today she passes by my side,
Almost without looking,
And throws me alms as she goes by.
Standing on the sidewalk,
Under the rain that soaked me,
Today I remembered
The sincere kisses
She gave me when I was
A great guy.
'Woman, to be so heartless!'
I said, bitter, and tore up her bills.
Then, whistling a tango,
Staggering from hunger,
I headed to my hovel.
