Cabocla Tereza
Eduardo Costa
Cabocla Tereza
Up on the top of the mountain
In a strange little house
All made of thatch
I stopped one night on horseback
Because of two loud cracks
That I heard beating inside
I dismounted very gently
Heard a perfect moan
And a voice full of pain
You, Tereza, rest
I swore to seek revenge
For the death of my love
Through the crack of the window
By a little yellow light
From a lantern almost fading
I saw a cabocla on the ground
And a man had in his hand
A gun illuminating
I turned my horse at a gallop
Marked with spur and whip
Bled the flank of the horse
I descended the mountain
Galopping my stallion
To fetch your doctor
Let's go back to the mountain
To that strange little house
Me and your doctor
We met the scared man
Who called us to one side
And told his story
A while ago I made a little ranch
For my cabocla to live
For it was our nest there
Far from this place
On the hill of the mountain
Near the moonlight
I lived a happy year
Without ever expecting this
And a long time passed
Thinking of being so happy
But Tereza, doctor
Did not want happiness
My dream in this look
I paid dearly for my love
Because of another caboclo
She abandoned my ranch
I felt my blood boil
I swore to kill Tereza
I saddled my chestnut horse
And went to look for her
Now I have avenged
This is the end of a love
I killed this cabocla
This is my story, doctor
