The Turn of the Coin

I walked barefoot
Let me tell you about my childhood
I say it wherever I stand
I’m not ashamed because that’s how it was
Selling sweet corn
That’s how I made enough to eat
It didn’t feel nice
But I had to fight through it

We left that ranch
Not because of problems, just so you know
But we were burdened with some debts
That weren’t right
Memories hit me
Of the paths I once walked
And I won’t deny it, I feel the urge
To go back again

A thought came to me
When I crossed the desert
I didn’t think twice
Because I jumped right in
The strength of my parents
Was what I always kept in mind
Thank God I made it
With tired feet, but I arrived

Arriving on the other side
I got my bearings and knew what to do
I got into the shady business
No point in denying, it’s obvious
With my cousin Gûero
There are adventures and more to come
We found a way to get things done
And we’re doing well

I have to thank one person
And that’s my wife
Because I was nobody and she
Gave me her love
I toast to what I’ve lived
Also for what I’ve overcome
Now that there’s a way
And I don’t need to worry about food

Life sure takes turns
I’ve heard it more than once
But now I’m a witness
Because I’ve seen it for myself
The coin turned
But I caught it in the air
I got to see mine
After so long searching for it
