Le Régiment de Sambre Et Meuse
Enrico Caruso
The Regiment of Sambre and Meuse
All those proud kids from Gaul
Went on without rest or pause
With their rifles on their shoulders
Courage in their hearts and packs on their backs
Glory was their only food
They had no bread, no shoes
At night, they slept on the hard ground
Using their packs for pillows
The Regiment of Sambre and Meuse
Always marched to the cry of "Freedom"
Cutting through the glorious path
That led them to immortality
To fight, they were a hundred thousand
And at their head, they had kings
The general, an old feeble man
Weakened for the first time,
Seeing defeat was certain
He gathered all his soldiers
Then he ordered a retreat
But they didn’t listen to him
The Regiment of Sambre and Meuse
Always marched to the cry of "Freedom"
Cutting through the glorious path
That led them to immortality
The clash was like thunder
It was a battle of giants
Drunk on glory, high on gunpowder,
To die, they tightened their ranks
The regiment, under the hail of bullets
Was attacked from all sides
Yet, the living wall
Stood firm and unyielding
The Regiment of Sambre and Meuse
Always marched to the cry of "Freedom"
Cutting through the glorious path
That led them to immortality
Numbers overcame courage
One soldier remained the last
He fought back with rage
But soon was taken prisoner
Seeing this fierce hero
The enemy wept for his fate
The hero took a cartridge
Swore then took his own life
The Regiment of Sambre and Meuse
Met death with the cry of "Freedom"
But their glorious story
Gives them the right to immortality
