Här är Den Sköna Sommaren
Evert Taube
Here Comes the Beautiful Summer
I sang by the farmer's gate
-Now summer's finally here
-It’s the end of spring, you see
The farmer replies so clear
-Deep froze the ground up north
And believe my words, it’s true,
It’s war and politics that have ruined our land too!
I sang for the merchant man
As he stood in his shop:
-Look, your shore is blooming now
And your bay's a sparkling drop!
But he answered gruffly:
-Yeah, you’re lost in your cheer,
But war and politics bring pain and sorrow near!
Then I walked down to the shore,
Where the boat was tied up tight.
-Hello there, sailor friend!
Do you hear the birds in flight?
Cuckoos call out here on land
Under the sun’s fierce brand!
But he replied: I’m sailing to a warmer land.
I went to evening prayer
To hear the word of God.
When I stood in the church aisle
I heard the pastor’s nod:
-Satan follows in your tracks
Fall, winter, and springtime too,
And he’ll chase you in the summer through the blooming dew!
Then I ran across the meadow
Where almond blossoms grow
And I see little Karin,
To the well she goes.
And then she calls out to me,
Yes, on the blooming way:
-Look, here comes the beautiful summer that I promised you today!
