Do Fundo da Grota

Everton Paschoal Everton Paschoal

From the Bottom of the Grotto

Riding by the fire
I tell stories and jokes
And the old campfire
Keeps my boot warm
And to sing for all of Brazil
Comes from the bottom of the grotto

I was raised in the countryside
In a mud and grass shack
That's why I sing like this
To remember my past
I grew up rough
Sleeping in the sheds
Near a ground fire
With my hair smoky

When the morning star breaks
I warm up the kettle
Almost at dawn
My riding horse
Neighs in the stable
While a sora rail
Sings perched

I hear the fox's cry
And there in the pen
The dapple gray colt neighs
In the mouth of the night
A skunk appears to me
Comes to pee near the house
To tease the wild dogs

On a sheepskin bed
I wake up at dawn
I hear a capybara
Cornered in the marsh
I grew up wild and tough
Honoring the old ways
Eating mixed beans
With little fat and no salt

When the morning star breaks
I warm up the kettle
Almost at dawn
My riding horse
Neighs in the stable
While a sora rail
Sings perched

I hear the fox's cry
And there in the pen
The dapple gray colt neighs
In the mouth of the night
A skunk appears to me
Comes to pee near the house
To tease the pack

Repairing a fence
At the edge of a corridor
On the handle of a post driver
With hands calloused by work
On my saddle I snap
And follow my countryside crew
And a wary partridge
Flies and startles the horse

When the morning star breaks
I warm up the kettle
Almost at dawn
My riding horse
Neighs in the stable
While a sora rail
Sings perched

I hear the fox's cry
And there in the pen
The dapple gray colt neighs
In the mouth of the night
A skunk appears to me
Comes to pee near the house
To tease the wild dogs

In the center of the grove
I hear the nighthawk's call
In a trench the guan
The sabiá sings in the cherry trees
And right on the edge of the stream
The cow and calf bellow
In the noise of the bell
I find the yoked oxen

When the morning star breaks
I warm up the kettle
Almost at dawn
My riding horse
Neighs in the stable
While a sora rail
Sings perched

I hear the fox's cry
And there in the pen
The dapple gray colt neighs
In the mouth of the night
A skunk appears to me
Comes to pee near the house
To tease the pack
