Ring of Gyges
What would you do if no one could see you?
If you had the power to disappear
To do whatever you wanted to do
Would you still be who you seem to be?
Think carefully before answering
If no one could see you
What would happen?
After all, do you do good because it's good
Or because morality says it's the right thing to do?
And if I told you
That there's a ring you put on and disappear
And if you could make your dream come true
And whenever you wanted, you could just be invisible
If you could steal without leaving a trace
Would you use it for your own pleasure
Or would you do good just to gain prestige, huh?
This question troubles me
What would you do if you had the ring of Gyges?
Would you help a relative
Or someone who really needs it
Would you release an impostor
Condemn an innocent
Or would you act naturally as you always have
And pretend that this ring never existed
Would you become a vigilante, kill criminals
And donate your organs to sick patients
Would you use it only to do good
Or would you give it as a gift to someone else
Would you take from those who have
To help those who don't
Would you avenge an enemy, martyr someone
Or was Machiavelli right in saying
Want to destroy a man? Then give him power
Would, if there were no laws or repression
Justice still prevail?
I think not
If I'm wrong, correct me
What would you do if you had the ring of Gyges?
And if you think the ring of Gyges is just a legend
Stop and pay attention
The ring of modernity is the cell phone in hand
With the veil of vanity, are you faithful to the truth or not?
What do you show? What do you hide?
So answer me, brother
Where are your flaws?
Who are you on your timeline?
Who are you when you're not online?
Man is the master of what he silences and the slave of what he says
Freud once said: Be careful not to go crazy with this ring
The narcissus that once saw himself in the lake, in the mirror
Now sees himself on the screen of his device
iPhone, Android
Mythology makes an analogy with human nature
And morality still serves as a kind of prosthesis
The dilemma is the same from Aristotle to Socrates
Notes
This is more than a hypothesis
And the deal is to appear, to seem
That you are who you seem to be
Who are you when no one is around?
With your phone turned off
What do you do with this power that was given to you?
Smile! You're not being filmed
