A Ilha
Fausto Bordalo Dias
The Island
We look at everything in silence on the shoreline
With eyes in the night suspended from the fading sky;
Oh new moon of October, bringing rains and winds,
The soul whispering, the mouth murmuring torments!
Descending from clouds of awe, mullets and catfish
If birds cradle the fish in certain miracles;
The body of the soul levitates, in the lament of litanies,
In the prayers of the condemned, in the curses of the besieged,
On the island of thieves, who leaves?
And take this message to the dock:
They are feathers, they are signs. Goodbye.
Free me from the hunger that consumes me, from this cold;
Free me from the evil of this animal that is this heat;
Free me from fate and if you can, blessed
Take me to fly through the air!
As if there were a charm, a strange magic,
The sun slowly floats on the edges of the day.
Undress my corsair body, dry my seaweed vein,
Bite my chest with sighs, from fights, from daggers,
From the island of thieves, who leaves?
And take this message to the dock:
They are feathers, they are signs. Goodbye.
We walk naked and barefoot, lovers, thirsty
If the veil of night lies in the curve of time.
Oh new moon of October,
The fears are fears of rains and winds,
Of the soul whispering, of the mouth murmuring
Goodbye
