On ne voit pas le temps passer
Jean Ferrat
Time Flies By
We get married young at twenty
And we don’t wait for years
To have three or four kids
Who fill up our days
Between the shopping and the dishes
Between cleaning and lunch
The world could fall apart
But we don’t have time to think about it
Should we cry, should we laugh
Is it envy or pity
I can’t bring myself to say it
Time flies by
The smell of brewing coffee
And that’s her whole universe
The kids are playing, the husband’s smoking
Days slip by in reverse
Barely see your kids being born
Before you have to kiss them goodnight
And all you see from the windows
Is a youth that’s lost its light
Should we cry, should we laugh
Is it envy or pity
I can’t bring myself to say it
Time flies by
She’s only seen Sundays
As a freshly pressed suit
A few flowers or some branches
Decorating the dining room
When a whole life boils down
To millions of pointless steps
Caught like a hammer and anvil
Between a table and a cabinet
Should we cry, should we laugh
Is it envy or pity
I can’t bring myself to say it
Time flies by
