La maison où j'ai grandi
Françoise Hardy
The house where I grew up
When I turn to my memories
I see again the house where I grew up
Lots of things come back to me
I see roses in a garden
Where trees used to live, now
The city is there
And the house, the flowers I loved so much
No longer exist
All my friends knew how to laugh
They knew how to share my games so well
But everything must end in life
And I had to leave, tears in my eyes
My friends asked me
'Why cry?' and
'Exploring the world is better than staying
You will find all the things that here
We don't see
A whole city falling asleep at night
In the light'
When I left that corner of my childhood
I already knew I was leaving my heart there
All my friends envied my luck
But I still think of their happiness
Of the carefree laughter
And it seems to me that I hear myself telling them
'I will come back one day, one beautiful morning
Among your laughter
Yes, one day I will take the first train
Of memory'
Time has passed and here I am again
In vain looking for the house I loved
Where are the stones and where are the roses
All the things I held dear?
Of them and my friends not a trace
Other people, other houses have taken their places
Where trees used to live, now
The city is there, and the house, where is it
The house where I grew up?
I don't know where my house is
The house where I grew up
Where is my house?
Who knows where my house is?
My house, where is my house?
Who knows where my house is?
