L'infinito
Giacomo Leopardi
The Infinite
Always dear to me was this lonely hill
And this hedge, which from so many sides
Excludes the view of the last horizon
But sitting and gazing, endless
Spaces beyond that, and superhuman
Silences, and profoundest quiet
I pretend in my thoughts, where for a little while
The heart is not afraid
And as the wind
I hear rustling among these plants, I that
Infinite silence to this voice
Compare: And I remember the eternal
And the dead seasons, and the present
And living, and the sound of her
So in this
Immensity my thoughts drown
And shipwreck is sweet to me in this sea
