Figueira amiga

Friendly Fig Tree

This fig tree, my friends, is on the corner of Forte with Assis Brasil.

Fig tree, how can it be
That you are so changed
And I see you so surrounded
By residential houses
Where are Carlo's and Zeca Paiva's blacksmith shops
Honestly, I'm angry
Not to see those I used to see.

Fig tree, it's been so long
Since I was away
I left my past here
And today I come looking
I just don't see the creatures
That I saw and am a witness
Picking up horses by the hoof
To put on the horseshoe.

Recited

Troops passed and passed through the Mangueira Pass
And on the Quarry Road just past the little cattle pen
The killer assassin and the meat-cutting knives
It seems like a joke that time has changed
What end did your old owners meet, fig tree
I even know that your owners died years ago
And the heirs sold their rights to others
You ended up like this, surrounded by neighbors
What happened to the children and those beautiful girls
I remember everything and it doesn't leave my memory.
Who you were, who you are, oh beautiful fig tree.
Zeca Paiva was your owner, Mrs. Alzira your mistress
How many times in your shade I barbecued, played the accordion
And evolution out of vanity turned everything into a city, you became a big city.

If I could, I would move you
To an open field
So you could feel up close
The things from the past
You with all that beauty
And this strange environment
You can't live happily
Away from nature.

That's right, fig tree, you are the memory of my old past.
Let's wrap it up, accordion player.
