Om kvelden når det mørkner
Glittertind
In the evening when it darkens
In the evening when it darkens and everyone goes to rest
I close the stable and the barn.
And the sparrows nestle in their little nests.
Then you probably also go to your den.
But then I don't know how to pass the time,
because in those long nights I long so much.
Then I have no desire to sleep.
Now you stand in front of the mirror and comb your hair
so black and serious is your eye.
Your heart probably beats, but why it beats
you don't know so well yet.
For no one has probably come close to you yet.
But over the chair hang your poor clothes,
your skirt and your stockings and your shirt.
It darkens over the road and autumn is approaching,
and the fog thickens over the meadows.
Many have gone astray on the paths in the forest,
and the stars rise so sternly.
But if you can't come tonight, my dear friend,
then send a message and tell me when you'll come again.
I haven't seen you in so long.
