La Linea Della Vita
Francesco De Gregori
The Line of Life
I've been passing through here my whole life,
and I still risk getting lost,
might just be too much sensitivity,
or maybe it’s just technical reasons...
And you say a compass, you should’ve at least brought it with you,
a compass, you could’ve at least explained how to use it,
a compass, come on...
There are loves that you forget,
and kisses that you can’t erase,
people who pass by without saying hi and spit,
and white dogs that sometimes come back.
And you say life, you should’ve at least understood why,
life, the time that changes with the wind that blows,
this tired soul that still breathes,
this flat corner that turns, this soul
sweet and cruel, that says "look at me..."
says "why don’t you talk...?" says "hurry up
before it’s too late... look at me...
because you’re not talking? Stop before it’s
too late...."
It’s been thirty years that I’ve been passing through here,
and now you pretend you don’t recognize me.
But look at the people doing backflips,
and how many little people on stilts, and you say:
"Forgive me... but I didn’t think it was you, forgive me..."
Alright, forgive me, but forgive me for what?
And you say "Life," life.... This empty box,
this naked soul, this finite line,
this water that runs fast uphill,
this strong and wounded soul, that says:
"look at me..." says "why don’t you talk...?"
says "stop before it’s too late... look at me...
because you’re not talking? Hurry up before it’s
too late, why don’t you talk...?"
says "stop before it’s too late... look at me...
because you’re not talking? Hurry up before it’s
too late... look at me... why don’t you talk...?
Look at me... why don’t you talk?
Stop before it’s too late...."
