Raggio Di Sole
Francesco De Gregori
Ray of Sunshine
Welcome, ray of sunshine, to this land of dirt and stones
to these lakes as white as snow, beneath your weary steps
to this love, to this distraction, to this carnival
where no one cares for you, where no one wishes you harm.
To this music that has no ears, to these books without words
welcome, ray of sunshine, you’ll have pencils to play with
and a glass to drink hard from, and a glass to sip slow
a smile to protect you and a passport to get far away
Welcome to this window, to this clear sky
to all the honks of the morning, to this world that’s way too full
to this strange railway, unique in the world for where it can go
it takes you where the wind blows, it takes you where you choose to return
To this calm moon, that gently sits down
in the middle of the sea there’s a cloud but it’s all good
because far away a ship passes, all the lights are on
welcome, child of no one, welcome to this country.
