Sinfonia Nº 4 - Quarto Movimento

Gustav Mahler Gustav Mahler

Symphony No. 4 - Fourth Movement

We enjoy heavenly pleasures
Therefore, we avoid earthly matters
No worldly hustle and bustle
Is heard in heaven!
Everything lives in gentle peace!
We lead an angelic life!
Yet we're quite cheerful besides!
We dance and jump
We hop and sing!
Saint Peter in heaven watches over!

John lets the little lamb out
The butcher Herod then watches out!
We lead a patient
Innocent, patient
A lovely little lamb to death!
Saint Luke slaughters the ox
Without any hesitation or care
Wine costs not a penny
In the heavenly cellar
The angels bake the bread

Good herbs of all kinds
That grow in the heavenly garden!
Good asparagus, beans
And whatever we desire!
Whole bowls full are ready for us!
Good apples, good pears, and good grapes!
The gardeners allow everything!
Whether you want venison, whether you want rabbits
On open streets
They come running!
Should a fasting day come
All fish swim joyfully towards us!
There goes Saint Peter already
With net and bait
Into the heavenly pond
Saint Martha must be the cook

No music on earth
Can be compared to ours
Eleven thousand virgins
Dare to dance!
Even Saint Ursula laughs along!
No music on earth
Can be compared to ours
Cecilia with her relatives
Are excellent court musicians!
The angelic voices
Stimulate the senses
So that everything awakens to joy
