Sinfonia Nº 8 - Segundo Movimento

Gustav Mahler Gustav Mahler

Symphony No. 8 - Second Movement

(Mountain gorges, forest, rock, solitude, holy
hermits distributed on the mountain, camped between chasms)

Forest, it sways closer
Rocks, they weigh down
Roots, they cling
Trunk close to trunk upwards
Wave after wave splashes
Deepest cave protects
Lions, they silently creep
Friendly around us
Honored sacred place
Holy love nest

Eternal blissful fire
Glowing love bond
Boiling pain of the chest
Foaming divine pleasure
Arrows, pierce me
Lances, conquer me
Clubs, crush me
Lightning, pierce me
So that the nothingness
Disperses everything
Shine the enduring star
Eternal love core!

Like a rock abyss at my feet
Resting on a deep abyss
Like a thousand streams flow radiantly
Towards the cruel fall of the foam of the flood
Like straight, with its own strong impulse
The trunk carries itself into the air
So it is the almighty love
That forms everything, nurtures everything

Around me is a wild roaring
As if the forest and rock ground were surging!
And yet, lovingly rushing
The water abundance plunges into the abyss
Called, like the valley to water
The lightning, which struck down in flames
To improve the atmosphere
That carried poison and mist in its bosom

Are love messengers, they announce
What eternally creating surrounds us
May it also ignite my inner self
Where the spirit, confused, cold
Tormented in dull senses' limits
Sharp with connected chain pain
Oh God! Calm the thoughts
Illuminate my needy heart!

The noble limb is saved
From evil by the spirit world
Whoever strives diligently
We can redeem
And if love has truly
Participated from above
The blessed host meets him
With a heartfelt welcome

Hands entwine
Joyfully into a ring
Stir and sing
Holy feelings therein!
Divinely instructed
You may trust
The one you revere
You will see

Those roses, from the hands
Loving holy penitents
Helped us win the victory
And complete the great work
To seize this treasure of the soul
Evil retreated as we scattered
Devils fled as we struck
Instead of the usual hellish punishments
The spirits felt the pain of love
Even Satan's old master
Was pierced by sharp pain
Rejoice! It is accomplished

A remnant of Earth remains for us
To bear painfully
And even if it were made of asbestos
It is not clean
If strong spiritual power
The elements
Draws near
an angel separates
United dual nature
Of the intimate two
Only eternal love
Can separate

I feel just now
Misty around rocky caves
A spirit life
Stirring nearby
Blessed boys
I see a moving crowd
Free from earthly pressure
Gathered in a circle
Who delight
In the new spring and adornment
Of the upper world

Here the view is free
The spirit elevated

May it be from the beginning
Ascending full gain
Joined with this!

Joyfully we receive
This in the puppet stand
Thus we obtain
An English pledge
Release the flakes
That surround him!
He is already beautiful and great
With holy life

There pass by women
Floating upwards
The glorious one in the midst
In the circle of stars
The queen of heaven
I see it in the radiance!
Highest ruler of the world
Let me in the blue
Outstretched sky
See your mystery!
Approve what moves
The man's chest
Seriously and tenderly
And with holy love
Carries towards you!
Our courage is invincible
When you command
Suddenly the heat subsides
When you appease us

Virgin, pure in the most beautiful sense
Mother, worthy of honor
Chosen queen
Equal to the gods

To you, the untouchable
It is not denied
That the easily seduced
Confidingly come to you
Dragged into weakness
They are hard to save
Who tears from their own strength
The chains of desire?
How quickly the foot slips
On uneven, smooth ground?

You soar to the heights
Of the eternal realms
Hear the plea
You gracious one!
You matchless one!

By the love that the feet
Of your god-transfigured son
Let tears flow as balm
Despite the Pharisee's scorn
By the vessel, which so richly
Dripped fragrance down
By the locks, which so softly
Dried the holy limbs

By the well, to which once
Abram led the herd
By the bucket, which the Savior
Coolly touched his lips
By the pure, rich spring
That now flows from there
Excessively, eternally bright
Flowing through all worlds

By the highly consecrated place
Where the Lord was laid down
By the arm, which from the gate
Warningly pushed me back
By the forty-year penance
Which I faithfully endured in the deserts
By the blessed parting greeting
Which I wrote down in the sand

You, great sinners
Do not refuse your presence
And increase a repentant gain
Into eternity
Grant also this good soul
Who once only forgot
Who did not realize she erred
Your forgiveness fittingly!

Incline, incline
You matchless one
You radiant one
Your face graciously to my happiness!
The early beloved
No longer troubled
He returns

He already surpasses us
In mighty limbs
The reward of faithful care
Will richly reciprocate
We were early removed
From life's choirs
But this one has learned
He will teach us

Surrounded by the noble choir of spirits
The newcomer hardly notices
He barely senses the fresh life
Yet he already resembles the holy host
See how he breaks every earthly bond
Of the old shell
And from an ethereal garment
Emerges first youthful strength!
Allow me to instruct him
The new day still blinds him

Come! Rise to higher spheres!
When he senses you, he will follow

Come! Come!

Look up to the Savior's gaze
All repentant tender ones
To blessed happiness
Gratefully to transform!
May every better sense
Be ready to serve you
Virgin, mother, queen
Goddess, remain gracious!

All that is transitory
Is but a symbol
The inadequate
Here becomes event
The indescribable
Here is done
The eternal feminine
Draws us upwards
