Santiago Es Pueblo Que Canta
Horacio Banegas
Santiago Is a Singing Town
When the earth wakes up
the voice of Mother Earth
adorned with wildflowers
with airs of Salamanca
awakens in all directions
with a desire for hope
and becomes fantasy
when its birds sing.
Through its ancient arms
that cradle my countrymen
go slowly burning
the fires of its summers
in deep melodies
and in the furrow of the years
where life and song
are sibling feelings.
Santiago is a singing town
my land is a singing land
Santiago is a singing town
my land is a singing land
Santiago is a singing town.
Where the salt of my land
spreads in silver waters
through the courtyards of silence
the suns dance their dances
and in the boxes of the west
ancient songs are sung
when the afternoon wind
scares away the sun.
When the night lights up
with a moon in the alders
the voice of a serenade
climbs through the stillness
pulls the shadows from the soul
and hangs them on a star
and from an old guitar
awakens the chacarera.
Santiago is a singing town
my land is a singing land
Santiago is a singing town
my land is a singing land
Santiago is a singing town.
It's a tuning fork of dreams
with harmonies of the soul
a dark tear
that becomes a box and a song
a heart that laughs, sings
and in the courtyard of my childhood
sky with seven little goats
that Father God left me.
And my land is like a flower
a love where life
through the waists of the air
plays with joy
the condombos of its chest
are growing in my throat
and in the guitars of time
Santiago is a singing town.
Santiago is a singing town
my land is a singing land
Santiago is a singing town
my land is a singing land
Santiago is a singing town.
