SCORN

I remember well
all the campaigns and every promise
from the so-called
poverty busters.
I remember well
that neat suit and the perfect smile
from the poster
that promised bread and culture.
I remember well
and I thank my memory
I won’t be
so dumb as to repeat history
by giving a vote
to those who lie and rob you
and now they complain
because they’re getting called out in the streets.
And what did they expect?
To be applauded?
To be cheered
with pats on the back?
And what did they expect?
A monument?
Not needed
because their faces are already set in stone.
While here... another wind blows
and you all tremble
seeing the neighborhoods in motion.
With your buddies,
your advisors, and your relatives
you divided up
what so many people are missing today.
Their dignity
was buried inside an envelope
and now they’re scared
seeing thousands of poor folks in the march.
And what did they expect?
To be embraced?
Red carpets and
a standing ovation when
you all pass by?
And what did they expect, your Majesties?
To be welcomed
with pomp and fireworks?
While here
everything’s on fire
and impatience
spreads like embers.
You broke laws
and gorged on privileges
shut down fields,
theaters, factories, and schools.
You put on makeup
for being famous on TV
and now you cry
because the scorn, oh how it hurts.
And what did they expect?
For some orchestra
to make an anthem in their honor
and celebrate their endless party?
And what did they expect?
For the textbooks
in a century
to highlight their work and qualities?
While here, here on the streets
pages of sadness
are written every day.
I remember well
the time you took your oath
like lottery winners
I saw you happy.
You served well, serving the power
that always commands you.
It may not be God
but now the Nation demands you.
And what did they expect?
A tribute?
For us to send postcards
when you go on vacation?
And what did they expect?
A medal?
It’ll look real nice
on top of that pinstripe suit.
Because this time... we won’t be fooled.
Let’s see if the people are the law
and how you get out of this one.
