La Adelita
Inti-Illimani
The Adelita
At the top of a steep mountain
a regiment was camped
and a brave girl followed them
madly in love with the sergeant.
Popular among the troops was Adelita,
the woman the sergeant idolized
who besides being brave was beautiful
that even the colonel respected her.
And it was heard that he said
to the one who loved her so much...
If Adelita went with another
he would follow her by land and by sea,
if by sea on a warship
if by land on a military train.
If Adelita wanted to be my wife,
and if Adelita were already my wife,
I would buy her a silk dress
to take her dancing at the barracks.
And after the cruel battle ended
and the troops returned to their camp
for the sake of a woman who sobbed
the prayer was heard in the camp.
And upon hearing it, the fearful sergeant
of losing his beloved forever
hiding his pain under the shawl
sang to his beloved in this way...
And it was heard that he said
to the one who was dying so much...
And if I happen to die in the war,
and they are going to bury my body,
Adelita, I beg you by God,
do not cry for me.
