La Petenera

The mermaid is enchanted
because she disobeyed
just for a bath
that she took on Holy Thursday
and during the sacred week.

The mermaid of the sea
they tell me she's very pretty
I would like to find her
to kiss her little mouth
but since she's an animal
it's not possible at all.

Once I embarked
in an English boat
passing by Germany
a wise Frenchman told me
on the American coast
and the sun shines upside down.
