La petenera
Isabel Parra
The Petenera
The mermaid boarded
a wooden ship.
As the wind failed her,
she couldn't reach land
and in the middle of the sea she stayed
singing the petenera.
While I was lying down
in the coolness of the sand
I heard the voice of a fish
that told the mermaid,
what troubles I've been through
to love that brunette.
A fisherman in the Bar
couldn't hit the mark.
Trying to catch a small fish,
he caught a toad by the tail
that not just anyone catches.
