La tropillita

The Little Herd
I have a little herd
with five little black donkeys, very black,
all covered up in black,
so black, so black like my black woman.
When I come back from the hill
with five little loads of dry firewood.
I drive them happily, singing
because I'm going back home to the ranch.
Giddy up donkeys, giddy up.
Giddy up donkeys, giddy up.
I live in a little valley
lost in the Pampa
of Tamarugal
planting corn and alfalfa
to feed my donkey
and have a snack.
I have plenty of water to irrigate
next to the spring that leads to the rocky terrain
and in my lonely nights
it seems like it wants to sing with me.
