Avec Le Coeur Et La Raison
James Kery
With Heart and Reason
For those who are chased from their homes
I write this text with heart and reason
I can't help it if the truth scares you
But I'm neither blind nor deaf nor mute
To stay silent is sometimes to condone violence and injustice
I will not be complicit in silence
Being anti-colonialist is not being anti-Semitic
I'm just a man with a sense of justice
I only have words to betray
For those treated as foreigners in their own country
For those who have been robbed, stolen from
Who have seen their most fundamental rights violated
Tragic legacy of unjust decisions
made under British mandates
Since the Balfour Declaration, we've been sinking
To understand the present, we must understand where history begins
Depriving a people of self-determination
Sharing their lands without any consultations
Witness the drama of colonization
Two options, struggle or resignation
Palestine was not a land without people
Destined to welcome a people without land
There is indeed an occupier and an occupied
There is indeed an oppressor and an oppressed
To deny is to try to erase History
And to erase History is to refuse that we (??)
There is indeed an aggressor and a victim
A colonizer and a Palestinian resistor
It's about established facts, not a point of view
My reason can stand by it even if my heart is moved
It's not about two equal forces facing each other
The media talks about war, what a shame
The 3rd armed power against a stateless nation
(Over 1000 to 10 ?) in the last Intifada
Is that war?
Despite all they endure
The Palestinians resist, the Palestinians exist
I've rarely seen such a courageous people
Their pride shines like the sun even in stormy weather
I can't dissociate myself
Just as a human being, I can't not take a stand
It's a call to share their pain
But the ignorant will say it's a call to hate
We don't feed injustice by denouncing it but by staying silent
Whatever they say, I write with heart and reason
No tranquility in the occupation
Daily life under occupation is humiliation
Humiliation is violent, constant
At the borders of checkpoints, freedom is dying
I write the distress of a nation
That no longer has free movement on its own land
Under the guise of security, apartheid is disguised
And the wall separates families
Colonies multiply under the passive and complicit eye of the United States
Endless negotiations for the creation of a Palestinian state
But when the time comes, what will be left?
Scattered pieces of land
As I write this text, nearly 3/4 have been pillaged
Nearly a million human beings have been pushed into exile
Why leave their land if their lives were not at risk?
Their belongings have become someone else's
Hopes of return have become illusions
Have you heard of the so-called Absentee Property Law?
The refugees' assets go to the occupation
Who can claim that's normal?
Who can claim that I should remain impartial?
To remain impartial when injustice is blatant
One must be deaf with a blind morality
History will testify that I stood up as best I could
While the great powers watch them die
Everyone talks about human rights but don't prevent the massacre
UN sanctions only apply to Iraq
We can't count the orphans anymore
The bullets that got lost in children's chests
How many infants under the rubble
Entire families decimated by bombs
Targeted assassinations striking civilians
Arbitrary imprisonments
Tell me, do you think I should stay silent?
I'm supposed to live in a democracy
Yet I'm afraid when I read what I write
It's all based on facts but I still fear the storm
I write with heart, reason, and courage
With heart and reason
With heart and reason
With heart but also with reason, I can't finish this piece without specifying that this text does not target a community but aims at the policy of a state and the complicit silence of the so-called free world. I'm aware that in each camp, I repeat, in each camp, there are people fighting for change, fighting for peace and justice, and I can only salute their courage and sincerity.
I lament the death of innocents on both sides. Who can rejoice in seeing children die? They who did not choose, the heirs of a world that adults bequeath to them. I write this text, a manifesto of my active support, to the peaceful, to the Palestinians. Not only because among them there are Muslims because, contrary to popular beliefs deeply rooted in the collective unconscious, not all Arab Palestinians are Muslims.
I support them because I believe with heart and reason that (??) and it is important for them that the world knows while waiting for the world to move, it is not about importing the conflict to France in a stupid and violent way by unjustly attacking people, their property, desecrating cemeteries. These are things that I do not condone and that I clearly condemn. I hope, I always hope to see peace and justice rise on the horizon and I write with heart and reason.
