El Sur También Existe
Joan Manuel Serrat
The South Also Exists
With its steel ritual its big chimneys its clandestine wise men its sirens' song its neon skies its Christmas sales its cult of God the Father and of the epaulettes with its keys to the kingdom the North is the one that orders but down here, down here the available hunger resorts to the bitter fruit of what others decide while time passes and parades go by and other things are done that the North does not forbid
With its tough hope the South also exists With its preachers its poisoning gases its Chicago school its landowners with their luxury rags and their poor bones their worn defenses their defense expenses With its invading feat the North is the one that orders But down here, down here each one in their hiding place there are men and women who know what to hold on to taking advantage of the sun and also the eclipses setting aside the useless and using what serves
With its veteran faith the South also exists With its French horn and its Swedish academy its American sauce and its English keys with all its missiles and encyclopedias its galaxy war and its opulent rage with all its laurels the North is the one that orders But down here, down here close to the roots is where memory does not omit any memory and there are those who die of longing and those who live intensely and so among all they achieve what was impossible that everyone knows that the South, that the South also exists
