Surungo de Candeeiro
João Luiz Corrêa
Lantern Dance
In a mud-walled shed
Dirt floor well wet
A lively dance
In the gaucho custom
In a corner the old lantern
Flickers on and off
Seems to understand
Dancing to the sound of the accordion
And the crowd stirs
Like a fish on the hook
Some even dare
Biting the leather
And the rough orphan lantern
Sometimes dims
But the boss keeps pumping
Watching over the males
The dance continues freely
And the sleepy accordion player
Is already a liter in
And shouting to the bartender
Bring more rum, buddy
Dawn is coming now
Even if the smell of the horsehair
Mixes with that of the lantern
I danced all the dances
With a lively brunette
A first-rate country girl
My height, same age
Who went to Soledade
I returned home single
And the lantern dance
Only left me with longing
