Herr, lehre doch mich, daß ein Ende mit mi
Johannes Brahms
Lord, Teach Me That an End Must Come with Me
Lord, teach me that an end must come with me,
and my life has a purpose, and I must depart.
Behold, my days are but a hand's breadth before you,
and my life is nothing before you.
Oh, how truly insignificant are all people,
who live so securely.
They pass by like a shadow,
and cause themselves much futile unrest:
they gather and do not know who will get it.
Now Lord, what shall I find comfort in?
I put my hope in you.
(Psalm 39:5-8)
The souls of the righteous are in God's hand,
and no torment touched them.
(Wisdom of Solomon 3:1)
