Donkey Lawyer

To those of you listening, I will tell a story,
Of what happened to me in the state of Paraná.
I was born and raised in the middle of this backcountry,
I sing songs,
I sing verses,
I barely play the guitar.
But when I went to Paraná, my grandmother told me to take a chestnut donkey.
My grandson, take this donkey to face the tough work in the middle of the plantation.

Paraná was still a desert of pure dense forest, I got a little job in a secluded place.
It was far from the city and far from the population, it was over 12 kilometers from the city of Campo Mourão.
My donkey was still wild, I taught him to work, he became a master at the job as if he could speak.
To catch the wild mule in the middle of the bush, riding on that donkey, no need to whip, just sway the reins of the animal, grab the mule's tail and knock it down.
One morning the boss came to visit me, he said, today is the city's anniversary, there's a big party there, there's an animal race with a prize of over 500 bucks for the winner.

I took my donkey, went down the road,
I arrived in Campo Mourão in less than half an hour.
As I was arriving, I heard the loudspeaker announce, ladies and gentlemen, the race is about to start.
I put my donkey on the track, the whole place was crowded, people wanted to see the animal cross the finish line.
The cowboys there laughed at me,
Seeing my donkey's hooves all cracked, one said to the other in a very funny gesture, will he run with this lame donkey.
And when the whistle blew, when the race started, my donkey took off in front, seemed possessed, I reached 100 meters ahead of the second place.
The people applauded me and hugged me, the one we didn't believe in was the champion.

As I was coming back, calm and peaceful,
Riding on my donkey, I had a little money in my pocket, I didn't know that in that region, a lieutenant, a lieutenant, a delegate, was urgently looking for a famous cattle thief.
A car passed by me, stopped in front, a well-dressed man got out, a soldier's lieutenant.
That well-dressed man said, it seemed true,
That I had stolen that donkey from his property.
The sergeant handcuffed me, took me away, when we arrived at the police station, he handed me over to the delegate, and said in this way, considering the case closed, we just arrested the famous cattle thief.

I was in prison for 30 days, 30 days bitter, paying without owing and praying without sinning, 30 days I waited for my trial, when my trial came, there was a large crowd, it was as if it were Muzambinho at its cowboy festival, everyone wanted to meet that famous thief.
When I entered the courtroom accompanied by 2 soldiers, I saw that well-dressed man with his 2 lawyers, he pushed the issue forward so that I would be sentenced to 100 years in prison, I would die behind bars.
I asked the judge for permission to speak, that the donkey was mine and I could prove it to everyone.
The prosecutor banged on the table and replied from there, if you don't prove that this donkey is yours, you will die in jail and no one will save you.
The judge gave me a chance, brought the donkey into the crowd, tied to the halter and handed it to me.
I was desperate but didn't lose my faith.
I asked my donkey to lie down, my donkey lay down,
I asked my donkey to stand up, my donkey stood up,
I asked my donkey to bite the cattle thief, my donkey seemed to laugh, gave a loud neigh, went to bite the man who was calm and smug with his 2 lawyers.
The man was startled, they were amazed, by me proving that the donkey was mine and so well trained.
There I was acquitted and the man was sentenced to 100 years in prison, I think he's still locked up and the judge said to the people: This countryman from the backcountry, turned his big donkey into his best lawyer!
