Der Nussbaum

The Walnut Tree
A walnut tree is growing in front of the house,
Fragrant,
Airy
Spreading leafy branches out.
Many lovely flowers are on it;
Gentle
Breezes
Come to warmly embrace them.
They whisper two by two in pairs,
Bending,
Gracefully
Tenderly leaning in for a kiss.
They whisper about a maiden,
Who thinks
The nights
And days long, not knowing, oh! what.
They whisper - who can understand so well
Softly
Wise? -
Whispering about a bridegroom and next year.
The maiden listens, the tree rustles;
Longing,
Imagining
It sinks smiling into sleep and dream.
