Masticando Silencio
José Larralde
Chewing Silence
If before the night arrives, this rain doesn't stop,
I realize there's no choice but to stand still.
These thistles and this cinacina won't be a good shelter,
But worse is to walk step by step, aimlessly.
Just pile up their bones on some bush,
To gather breath, rest, and a bit of warmth,
Meanwhile, I'll be putting some bait on the branches,
Maybe under the canvas shelter, a spark will ignite.
Why think that the morning star brings a sun.
Why dream, if awake I see better.
What good are memories of other times,
If today we chew silence, my dog and I.
If before the night arrives, this rain doesn't stop,
We'll be shivering tightly, completely soaked.
Only God knows if the rain is a gift for those with a roof,
Or a disgrace and punishment from the sky for the forsaken.
By the grace of no one and everyone,
Our skin breaks, there's no patience,
That lasts longer than eternity.
On the same old path, I go and return,
With no direction, no sky, no place, just solitude.
Why think that the morning star brings a sun.
Why dream, if awake I see better.
What good are memories of other times,
If today we chew silence, my dog and I.
