Sólo Los Hombres Buenos

José Larralde José Larralde

Only Good Men

Only good men live a whole day.

They are born in the morning,
serene before the rising sun;
upright from the soul,
with their feet lower than their shoes;
with a calm face;
with a mind educated to think that it is the way;
which silence is better;
what is the shout?; when to say I don't want?;

when to accept the unheard of?.

Why cry with laughter and laugh in tears, why?.

Only good men live a whole day.

Only good men await a moment;
listen to the truth of the one in front,
compare their truth with the truths
of every humanity that makes existence.

Only good men are in a hurry
to point out the path to the stream,
so that every thirst is quenched
with the water of all baptisms.

Only good men place
their faith above the stones,
so that the world sees and knows that faith
is always the peak and bridge in the abyss.

Only good men are unaware that they are,
sing when silence deafens the brain
and when in spring the heart of the seed bursts,
and the cultured sound of flowers and pollen releases its sweetness of life,
only good men in silence put a smile on each flower.

Only the man who is good stays awake
to be better than himself every day
without comparing the goodness of others or allowing himself the luxury of being a guide.

Only good men are good men.

The bread of the good man is different
for being the same as the bread of the one who denies it,
although the generous bread giver does not
know who spits on it and who waters it.

If I could meet you on the road
and simply ask you, how are you? Are you happy?.
If I could see your face as it is,
without the foolish concealment that men offer as relief
to those who stay awake for us.

If I could follow your steps on the path of time,
encouraging your march, watching your longing,
picking up one by one the minutes of life
that will remain behind you without you realizing
like hermetic flowers, perfuming another world.

If I could tell the eternal future in a little card:
I recommend my son to you, don't treat him too harshly.
Don't give him anything
but give him the rush to be a good man,
to be noble and sure.

If you can give him wit,
let it be clear, not dark,
I prefer him to be a slave
rather than a hangman.

And one word at the end of his course.

God in all the hours of his life and his world,
and for God's sake, I beg you, don't treat him too harshly.
