Un Perro Muerto No Más

Just a Dead Dog

I saw it, lying there, casually on the side of the trail
Just a dead dog, which in the end matters little
Surely it taunted a car and fell under a wheel
Or maybe out of sheer foolishness, didn't even see the danger
And, being gentle and trusting, faced it without realizing, that dogs can also be absent-minded at times
And go, like Christians, dealing with some sorrow

And because I was in that afternoon with a clear head
I kept thinking about its death on the side of the trail
And I started to fit it into my thoughts
I made it mine or someone else's, whatever the case may be
But it seemed to me that the poor thing had an owner and belonged to someone

I imagined it following a horse out in the countryside
Helping its master deal with the sheep
Or turned into a guardian of some rural house
And it seemed to me to hear it barking at a weasel
Or waiting for a mouse next to a pile of firewood
Dogs, my friend, provide us with more than one service

Then I started to think, continuing with my nonsense
That it could have been from a boy who accompanied him to school and
While he studied, he went out to hunt for prey
And only found death on the side of the trail

And there, yes, the idea made me sadder than the other idea
Because a dog for a boy is in the countryside, even if he doesn't believe it
Friend, brother, and toy to spend whole hours
It would be called Guardian, Barbucho, Pinta, Sorpresa
Bravo, Gaucho, Capitán, the name they gave him
If now he's dead and that doesn't matter either

You just have to think that someone is waiting for him at some ranch
And there will be no shortage of those who say he went after a female dog
Thinking that the cunning one won't even miss his home
He will never go out into the countryside under the stirrup of the rider
Nor will he follow a little boy who is saddened by his absence today
Nor will he take care of the houses on the side of the door
So, why think if this doesn't solve anything
And these things are forgotten in the end, like anything else

I saw it, lying there, casually, on the side of the trail
Just a dead dog, which in the end, matters little
