Cosas de Doña Asunción
José Luis Perales
Things of Doña Asunción
It's five in the afternoon
The meeting begins
The game of canasta
The religious chat.
The teacher, the pharmacist,
The priest and Doña Asunción;
The mid-afternoon coffee
And some conversation.
And they will talk
About Don Ramón's son,
So clever he seemed and has become a shepherd.
I don't know if I'm mistaken,
Comments Doña Asunción,
But last night I saw so-and-so lurking in the alley.
Mr. Priest,
I don't know if you remember
Doña Engracia's wedding
Which was one night at three.
Poor thing,
So young and already with six.
Of course, as they say, Don José protects her.
And the rain on the window
And the flower in the vase
Sleeping, waiting for the morning.
The lights of the alley
Observe but remain silent,
And a shepherd passes under the rain.
Unintentionally, the hours pass by
On the clock
The teacher says goodbye
The others say goodbye.
Comments on the matter
Maybe she has a love
The pharmacist blushes, the priest asks for forgiveness.
But, well,
Let's have another coffee
Tomorrow, as it's Sunday, there will be mass at ten.
The meeting ends,
Tomorrow from four to six
They will continue with their canasta, they will continue with their coffee
And they will talk...
