El Hombre Y La Sirena
José Luis Perales
The Man and the Mermaid
The house was white and the sky blue
The village was white with sand and lime
The Mediterranean was black and deep
When that sailor set sail
They say in the village
That he dreamed of mermaids
That enchanted him
When there was a full moon
That he went down to the beach
Like a lover
And searched among the sand
For seashells
And he sang a desperate song
Waiting
For his love to arrive
They say he was strong
Like the mast of a sailboat
His smile white
And his hair black, black
That he played with the children
Playing tag and hide-and-seek
And wandered like a wolf through the port
And sang a desperate song
Waiting for his love to arrive
The white house fell silent
They remember him sitting
Gazing at the sea
Waiting for a full moon night
Preparing his boat to set sail
They say they saw him
Walking on the sand
That he went naked
Chasing his mermaid
That he carried in his hands
Seashells and corals
And in his chest a lovestruck heart
That set sail to find her among the waves
And he never returned
To the white house
