Por qué doblan las campanas
José Rótulo
Why the Bells Toll
The bells in my town are ringing
with the joy of cowbells,
the doves fly scattered
with the sound of the bells
that chime with their voice.
Never has it been heard so early
that ringing of the bells,
the harmony of the brass is broken
by a trumpet announcing loudly...
the invader has arrived.
Lord... have mercy, Lord...
for the love of our God,
Lord... have mercy, Lord...
for the horror of seeing suffering.
Prayers that are pleas to Jesus,
songs and kisses for their return,
after the light, those who were blinded
cannot see the man who kills
the man without compassion...
Lord... have mercy, Lord...
for the love of our God...
They call at dawn's first light,
once again, the sound of the bells;
they ring this time in thanks
because those who went to fight
are coming back home.
The wheat fields are starting to grow again,
the springs are singing again,
everything around breathes life,
you don’t see wounds bleeding...
and peace reigns in the world...
