L'échappée Belle
Joyeux Urbains
The Great Escape
Once upon a time, there was an absurd fool
Riding stupidly on a mountain bike
In the rain, in the middle of a highway
Dragging behind him a pack of cars
Oblivious, ignoring the crucial rules
Of the road code that would keep him safe
He burst onto a dangerous intersection
Not even glancing at the light
That he ran, all smiles, thinking he was fine
Unaware of the car coming from his right
That hit him just as the light turned green
Swerving like a devil popping out of a box
How many people would’ve died at that exact moment
But he, that idiot, was still alive
Our fool flew, legs up to the sky
Flapping, ridiculous, his invisible wings
And went crashing through the windshield ahead
Of a vehicle that had just taken off
Whose driver was left scrambling under shards of glass
Leaving the culprit moaning on the pavement
Our crafty cyclist walked away without a scratch
And went off to do something else stupid
But if God had put on that steel horse
A Desproges, a Brassens, a Vian, a Maupassant
Since it’s the best who leave first
He would’ve surely gone out feet first
Oh, how many brave souls passed at twenty
And me, who no longer have them, I'm still alive
