Noite de Geada
Julio Saldanha
Frosty Night
The full and silvery moon
Covers the expanding field
In the quiet and frosty night
Harbinger of a big frost
Not even a hoot of an owl
Is heard in this winter
Oh, chilly July
That even chills the soul!
I wrap myself in the blanket
Sitting by the embers
Left to fate
Only a bay horse as a partner
My cold cot, in the corner
Doesn't encourage me to lie down
I stay here, on the bench
Until the day breaks
I stir the ground fire
So as not to die
While, here in the shed
Through the cracks, I can see
The beautiful moonlight
Illuminating the winter pastures
While the bare pampa
Is covered in frost
The night is certainly beautiful
Inspiring the singers
But, for those who walk free
From passions and loves
The beauty of the moment
Doesn't warm the heart
As the cold emerges from within
From the fear of loneliness
In these winter nights
I feel the urge to be absent
As I sense losing the essence
In the Julys of this land
If it weren't for this attachment
That we have, within us
I would have left, earlier
For another warmer place
But for those who live in the countryside
And have work as fate
There's no use in complaining
Because life provides
That's why I already imagine myself
Tomorrow, breaking the frost
At the turn of destiny
Rounding up cattle in the winter pasture
