Lamento de Um Rio
Julio Saldanha
Lament of a River
I was born when life was born
I charted my own course
Forward, I always walked
Calm like a rider
I saw Alegrete being born
I helped it rise
Why do they now want
To slowly bring me down?
I am a river of many poets
That grew without anyone
Today I need someone
To help me walk
I give water, I don't know how to charge
I make the seed sprout
Remember that I am alive
Not only when I flood
I am calm, swift
I have fish and yellow water lilies
Adopt me as your child
Look at me with your heart
I need to keep moving
Carrying life with me
I don't deserve this punishment
Carrying pollution
A man, no matter how strong
Seeing death, is terrified
I don't want to leave
Dying every morning
I am sad and lonely
Like the cry of Tarrã
Listen to this lament
I am the Ibirapuitã
