Little Hans went alone
into the wide world.
Stick and hat suit him well,
is in good spirits.
But Mama weeps a lot,
now has no little Hans.
'Wish you luck' her look says,
'just come back soon!'

Seven years, cloudy and clear,
Hans was in a foreign land;
then the child remembers,
hurries home quickly.
But now he's not a little Hans anymore,
