Solitude

I
She always sits
In the same spot
Days go by.

In the corner where she always
Today, being her special day
She waits for someone to sit
In the chair beside her
And tell her many things.

She’s baked a cake
Made it with her own hands
Put her heart into it
But the hours passed
And no one came to see her.

It can't be
Lord, it can't be
The hate and rage it brings
That the greatest enemy
Of life
Is called solitude.

II
Days go by
Wondering why,
This punishment.

And from a box she’s pulled
The memory of a photo
Carefully she holds it
Tears that little by little
Who knows how much she’s cried.

She grabs her reading glasses
To thread a needle
That soon starts to sew
The sheets of a crib
For a grandchild she no longer sees.

It can't be
Lord, it can't be
The hate and rage it brings
That the greatest enemy
Of life
Is called solitude.

III
She gave her whole life
For her loved ones.

Worked her whole life
Lived for her children
There was always food
And a school and a roof
She never gave up.

Her husband left
With God to a distant heaven
She fought for everyone
And he helped her out
From heaven he gave her strength.

It can't be
Lord, it can't be
The hate and rage it brings
That the greatest enemy
Of life
Is called solitude.

IV
In the corner
Of an old nursing home in solitude
She is crying.

Maybe one day her grandkids
Will come to meet her
Her heart is restless
Because no one comes to see her
Even if just for a moment.

Her son is around
She excuses him alone
Maybe he couldn’t come
Tomorrow around this time
Maybe that will make her happy.

It can't be
Lord, it can't be
The hate and rage it brings
That the greatest enemy
Of life
Is called solitude.
