Le Rêve du Diable Le Rêve du Diable

The Ugly Bearded Man

Last week at the construction site
I was the victim of an accident
I made myself a crutch
To go see all my relatives
Arriving in the big city
I was walking through the small streets
When I wanted to talk to the girls
They called me the big bearded man

I was walking here and there
With my cane and my wooden leg
And everyone would say
'That bearded man is ugly'

One day, I go to the dance
Ah!... I was quite bothered
I asked the beautiful Hortense
If she wanted to accompany me
'Ugly bearded man, leave me alone'
She replied to me with an air of indignation
'With your cane and your crutch
You're not able to come dance'

I danced like this, like that
With my cane and my wooden leg
And everyone would say
'That bearded man is ugly'

But one fine day, I decide
To go see her parents
As I found her quite nice
I ask her very politely
I said to her: 'Dear young lady,
Will you have me as your husband?'
It triggered a quarrel
She almost twisted my neck

'Ugly bearded man, wretch
Even though you're at my parents' house
You will still tumble
From the top to the bottom of the stairs'

At the bottom of the stairs, I tumble
I get up all exhausted
And the police at the door
Didn't hesitate to arrest me
And everyone was worried
They took me for a vagabond
And the police with their whip
Made me dance a jig

I danced like this, like that
With my cane and my wooden leg
And everyone would say
'That bearded man is ugly'
