The Value of Unity
Marcos Mundstock: For us Latin Americans, one of the key imperatives of the current moment is the reaffirmation of our Latin American identity. Today, more than ever, the people of Latin America need to come together, we must overcome our differences, we have to support each other, uh... and all our nations should unite like sisters... uh... "and everything will be alright, man... thank you." Following this principle, we thought it fitting to include a performance tonight by the famous Latin American music group "The United Voices." Welcome.
(Daniel, Ernesto, Carlos Núñez, and Jorge appear. A few seconds later, Puccio arrives "fashionably" late)
Marcos Mundstock: Well, before your performance, we’d like to ask you, uh... basically, what are your goals with your singing?
Daniel Rabinovich: Our singing is aimed at the exploited, the oppressed, the marginalized, those at the bottom of the social ladder: the rabble.
Marcos Mundstock: Ha, ha, ha. Yes, no... uh... I mean the... uh... the goals, the goals in terms of... uh...
Ernesto Acher: Well, our singing is a song without distinctions, without borders, it’s a song for peace, for love, for brotherhood, for harmony... and for the bourgeois pigs to rot.
Jorge Maronna: And also the bourgeois men!
Marcos Mundstock: Uh... do you think you’ll be successful with that theme here at the "Jockey Club"?
Carlos Núñez Cortés: You see, fellow journalist; we’ve always been successful because what we do is truly popular art, art for everyone: men and women, young and old, white and black... no, not black.
Marcos Mundstock: Ha, ha, ha, ha. Uh, no... but the goals, I mean, the... the...
Ernesto Acher: Ah, yes, yes. We support the fight against colonialism.
Daniel Rabinovich: Down with the colony!
Carlos Núñez and Ernesto Acher: Down!
Jorge Maronna: Down with the perfume!
Carlos Núñez and Ernesto Acher: Down!
Daniel Rabinovich: Down with the deodorant!
Carlos Núñez and Ernesto Acher: Down!
Jorge Maronna: Up with the shampoo!
Carlos Núñez and Ernesto Acher: Down...!
(Everyone looks at Jorge, asking why up with the shampoo if everything else is down, and Jorge gestures that shampoo goes on the head, which is up)
Marcos Mundstock: Ah, alright! Ha, ha, ha, ha, sure, sure... He says "up with the shampoo" but puts it down... Ha, ha, ha, ha, right. You get it? Down, up doesn’t come out... Oh, oh, oh, nothing comes out, ha, ha, ha... how great...!
(Suddenly he looks at the audience and remembers he’s live. He gestures to play it cool and resumes the interview)
Marcos Mundstock: Uh, no, what we really want to ask you is if... uh... there’s any, uh... political line, any ideological current that you subscribe to.
(As he pronounces the last word, he spits on Daniel, who, annoyed, wipes his eye with his hand)
Daniel Rabinovich: Our group aligns with the general guidelines of the Latin American Popular Liberation Front: the FLPL.
(As he pronounces the acronym, he spits on Marcos, who in turn wipes himself. They both compare their hands to see who spat more)
Carlos Núñez Cortés: You see, fellow journalist: our branch was originally the American Independent Popular Party; we called it the "PIPA." But later, for doctrinal resizing reasons, it was renamed the Independent Popular Workers Party; we called it the "PIPO." Currently, it’s called the Intransigent Popular Independent Party; we call it "The Party."
Carlos López Puccio: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha... He almost said "pee-pee!"
(Jorge calls Puccio’s attention for his reckless comment, and Puccio lowers his head, embarrassed)
Marcos Mundstock: No, let’s see if... uh... we can... uh... somehow guide the audience regarding the true objectives and foundations, uh... can we say that you follow the line of Marx and Engels?
Ernesto Acher: Where does that line go?
Marcos Mundstock: I don’t know, at least you must know Lenin’s works.
Daniel Rabinovich: Yes, but we don’t like his songs.
Marcos Mundstock: Lenin composed songs?
Daniel Rabinovich: Lenin and McCartney.
Marcos Mundstock: Well, we believe it’s time for words to take a backseat, especially these words. So let’s let the music of "The United Voices" speak.
Ernesto Acher: We will perform for you "The Value of Unity."
All:
Join us, oppressed people, and sing our song,
because united we will achieve liberation.
My song is simple and straightforward, so no one gets lost.
Remember this simple refrain:
it’s time to reverse the historical trend of capitalist accumulation.
Daniel Rabinovich and Ernesto Acher:
No more tricks and privileges,
if you join our leader, Commander González.
Carlos Núñez and Jorge Maronna:
González would need to be clever and decisive,
and it wouldn’t hurt to have more loyalty to the party.
Daniel Rabinovich and Ernesto Acher: González Commander, González Commander!
Carlos Núñez and Jorge Maronna: Pérez, Pérez!
Carlos López Puccio: María, I love you!
(The next verse is sung by everyone at once: Daniel and Ernesto on one side and Carlos and Jorge on the other. In the end, all voices unite in a single word: "unity")
Daniel Rabinovich and Ernesto Acher: Forward, proletarians...!
Carlos Núñez and Jorge Maronna: Stop, proletarians...!
Daniel Rabinovich and Ernesto Acher: ... with justice and freedom...
Carlos Núñez and Jorge Maronna: ... against hatred and evil...
Daniel Rabinovich and Ernesto Acher: ... let’s discard the ideas...
Carlos Núñez and Jorge Maronna: ... let’s embrace the ideas of...
Daniel Rabinovich and Ernesto Acher: ... that destroy the...
All: ... unity.
Daniel Rabinovich and Ernesto Acher: Unity!
Carlos Núñez and Jorge Maronna: Unity!
Daniel Rabinovich and Ernesto Acher: Unity!
Carlos Núñez and Jorge Maronna: Unity!
Daniel Rabinovich and Ernesto Acher: González!
Carlos Núñez and Jorge Maronna: Pérez!
Daniel Rabinovich and Ernesto Acher: González!
Carlos Núñez and Jorge Maronna: Pérez!
Carlos López Puccio: María!
Jorge Maronna:
We can be united because there are greater figures,
our undisputed guide is the ideologue Flores.
Carlos Núñez: No! Traitor Flores!
Ernesto Acher: González commander!
Daniel Rabinovich: García President!
Carlos López Puccio: María wife!
(Again they all sing at once, each on their side, finishing the verse in unison with the word "united")
Jorge Maronna: Proletarian, may your struggle not be in vain. If you join the party, we will achieve a tomorrow that is...
Carlos Núñez: To never be defeated by the multinationals, alongside Sergeant Perales we must be...
Daniel Rabinovich: In a better future, victory will have come. Then it will be better to die than not to be...
Ernesto Acher: May your struggle not be in vain. If you join the party, we will achieve a tomorrow that is...
All: ... united.
Carlos López Puccio: United in marriage
Jorge Maronna: Up with Flores!
Carlos Núñez: Up with Perales!
Daniel Rabinovich: Up with García!
Ernesto Acher: Up with González!
Carlos López Puccio:
Up with María!
María, I love you
All: There will be no more masters!
Carlos López Puccio: You will always be mine
All: There will be no private property!
Carlos López Puccio: You are different
All: We are all equal!
Carlos López Puccio: I love you, despite your frivolity
All: María, bourgeois!
Carlos López Puccio: I love you, despite your bourgeois ideas
All: María, reactionary!
Carlos López Puccio: I love you, despite your reactionary ideas
All: María, we hate you!
Carlos López Puccio: I love you, despite being a wealthy landowner, a latifundist, and owner of numerous industries in the country and abroad.
All: María, we love you!
