Les Luthiers Les Luthiers

The Explained

The folklorist Cantalicio Luna... he he... no... yes... no... yes... more or less... the folklorist Cantalicio
Luna was born in the province of Buenos Aires... at
18 years old... the early morning when he arrived from Santiago
del Estero, where he was born. He saw the light, the light...
do you understand?
Cantalicio when young, used to be a cowboy. When young,
then he forgot. Later he started selling horse boots
but it didn't go well: most of the horses
were barefoot. In the war against the Indians,
during the conquest of the desert, Cantalicio traveled
the forts with his guitar singing, entertaining
the troops; this earned him gratitude... from the
Indians.
Cantalicio is the author of 'The Explained', a gato in which he explains, in an accessible language, the meaning of
some Creole terms. Les Luthiers will now perform, precisely, 'The Explained', by Cantalicio
Luna, out of the program!

small, metallic, toothed wheels,
that are attached to the rider's boot
and that dig into the horse's flesh when galloping.

The ones I just explained.

Elegant must dress
the serenade singer x2
must cover his legs with a good pair of...
hemp fiber footwear, in the shape of a sandal,
very common among people of very modest resources or of
low condition.

EA: Espadrilles!
CHORUS: We have known for a long time
the cat with relationships
to be a new cat is this cat,
a cat with explanations.

DR: First!..... Second goes now, piece of...!
CN: Second!

The horse in its corral,
the pig in its pigsty, x2
the carancho in its nest,
and the countryman in his...
sort of hut away from the village, with walls or
without them, and that can preserve from the weather
whatever is necessary.

EA: Shack, cabin...
T: The countryman must live in...

EA: In his little hotel
T: ...what I just defined.

By the fireside
you have to see the country folk, x2
lots of singing and guitar playing,
lots of wine and...
pastries made of dough that are fried or baked and
have a filling of minced meat, seasonings,
olives, and bell pepper.

EA: Sweet pastries
LP: Empanada
CN: Don't you realize they're pancakes?
LP: They're going to be meat pancakes!
EA: Then they're cannelloni...
(they start arguing about the origin of the
cannelloni)

DR: Paupá... paupá... paupá... paupá... paupá...
Stop it! Wow! Oh my! At the voice of aura!
Don't argue! Everybody!

CHORUS: We have known for a long time
the cat with relationships...
a new cat is this cat,
a cat with explanations
